It's hard to believe that Studio MAPPA has only been around for 10 years.  In just a short amount of time, the studio has already produced such notable works as Kids on the Slope (2012), Rage of Bahamut: Genesis (2014), Ushio and Tora (2015),  Dorohedoro (2019), Jujutsu Kaisen (2020), Yasuke (2020) and more.

This past weekend, the anime studio held a special online fan event to celebrate the milestone and thanked their supporters by showcasing some exciting upcoming projects.  The studio's in development titles include:

  • an original anime film from prolific writer Mari Okada (Her Blue Sky, A Whisker Away) titled  Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kōjō (Alice and Therese's Illusory Factory)
  • the first teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated Chainsaw Man TV anime
  • a first look at a musc-themed battle anime collaboration with Studo Madhouse titled takt op.Destiny
  • a fresh trailer for Idaten Deities in the Peaceful Generation
  • a new key visual for Attack on Titan: The Final Season- Part 2

MAPPA released a short, "gratitude" video thanking fans for their support, which you can view below.  A special key visual was also released which featured characters from a few of their past projects.

Not only is Mari Okada writing the script for the play but she's also directing the original film that Okada described as first-love "fantasia story." Staff for the project was confirmed during the livestream and confirms that Okada will be reuniting with much of her Maquia - When the Promised Flower Blooms staff, including Yuriko Ishii (character design), Kazuki Higashiji (art director), and Tadashi Hiramatsu (assistant director).

Chainsaw Man

The announcement that everyone was waiting for after weeks of anticipation, a TV anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man is in the works and the first footage did not disappoint. In the first 24 hours after the trailer premiered, the YouTube video had over 3 million views. Tatsuki Fujimoto's gory manga is looking poised to become the next Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen- a popular manga series that explodes in North America and abroad after its anime adaptation.

Denji's a poor young man who'll do anything for money, even hunting down devils with his pet devil-dog Pochita. He's a simple man with simple dreams, drowning under a mountain of debt. But his sad life gets turned upside down one day when he's betrayed by someone he trusts. Now with the power of a devil inside him, Denji's become a whole new man—Chainsaw Man!

takt op.Destiny

While the Chainsaw Man TV anime was expected, the takt op. Destiny anime was a pleasant surprise as no one expected the project to be a collaboration with Madhouse. The trailer below confirms that the anime will premiere in Japan on October 5. The anime is described as taking place in a futuristic America where monsters appear who can only be defeated by the power of music. These "musicarts" practitioners are women, who team up with male "conductors" to fight the monsters called D2.

Idaten Deities in the Peaceful Generation

The special livestream event also included another look at Idaten Deities in the Peaceful Generation, which will premiere later this Summer on July 22. The ongoing manga series has released 3 volumes to date and follows a group of young gods who must suddenly deal with returning demons who were sealed away 800 years ago by their deities' predecessors.

Attack on Titan: The Final Season- Part 2

Lastly, we received a new key visual for the second half of the final Attack on Titan anime season. If you've managed to somehow avoid spoilers from the manga (which ended this past April), you'll only have to hold out for a bit longer as the last episodes of season 4 won't air until the Winter 2022 anime season.
