Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train is proving to be just as popular in North America as it was in Japan. While the film nearly secured the top spot last weekend over the new Mortal Kombat movie, the smash hit anime film secured the win in its second weekend of release.
In this pandemic-afflicted market, box office numbers are understandably down, but the $6.4M earned by Mugen Train would be a solid number even during normal times. Mugen Train will become just the second anime film ever to come in first place at the North American box office, following in the footsteps of the first Pokemon movie, which hit theaters 21 years ago.
This past weekend's earnings take Mugen Train to $34.1M total at the North American box office and a worldwide total of $423M to date, with $368M coming from Japan alone where it surpassed Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away to become the highest-grossing Japanese film of all-time.
Tanjirou Kamado and his friends from the Demon Slayer Corps accompany Kyoujurou Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, to investigate a mysterious series of disappearances occurring inside a train. Little do they know that Enmu, one of the Twelve Kizuki, is also on board and has prepared a trap for them.
