The DEMON SLAYER Movie Has Passed SPIRITED AWAY To Become The Highest Grossing Japanese Film Worldwide

Analysts long expected Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train to surpass Studio Ghibli 's Spirited Away as Japan's highest grossing film worldwide and it's finally happened.

After passing Spirited Away in December to become the highest grossing film of all-time in Japan, Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train is now the highest grossing anime film of all-time  worldwide thanks to the film's South Korea earnings.

The film has earned about  ¥37,776,680,150 yen (about US$359.7 million) in Japan alone, since its release on on October 16, 2020 and was the #1 film in the country for 12 straight weeks. The film's worldwide gross has now passed $400 million USD, making it the first anime film to pass this milestone.

Perhaps what's most impressive about this feat is that the film has only opened in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Vietnam. This current international gross doesn't include box office dollars from North America, Europe or Australia.

Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train is still without a set release date in North America but it will receive a small, Oscar-qualifying run in Miami later this week, starting February 26.  Miami was likely chosen as the usual locales of NYC and Los Angeles are in various stages of lockdown due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

Tanjirou Kamado and his friends from the Demon Slayer Corps accompany Kyoujurou Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, to investigate a mysterious series of disappearances occurring inside a train. Little do they know that Enmu, one of the Twelve Kizuki, is also on board and has prepared a trap for them.
