Serving as a prequel to the Laughing Under the Clouds manga, Laughing in Purgatory was created by Kemuri Karakara in 2014 and released in the pages of Monthly Comic Garden. The original series, also by Karakara, was released in 2011 and was a massive hit, even spawning multiple spin-offs and an anime!
Laughing Under the Clouds has also spawned some stage plays and a live-action film; however, while the period manga is such a hit, Laughing in Purgatory has served as not just a serviceable prequel but also a fitting follow-up to the original series. Since the new manga streaming app, Mangamo, released, there have been tons of manga that have become available on the service, which has helped to lower the problem of piracy.
Following a recent announcement on the app's Twitter, the hit prequel series now has its first five chapters on the app! There is no confirmation when more chapters will release but with five out now; it is a great start for new readers.
For anyone interested, we have also interviewed the app's co-founder, where we talk about various other books on the service. We would love to hear your thoughts on the new announcement in the comments below!
The manga serves as a prequel to Laughing Under the Clouds, and it is set during Japan's Warring States period, 300 years before the main manga's story. The story centers on the Orochi at Lake Biwa.
Laughing in Purgatory chapters 1-5 are available now on Mangamo!
