History of BASTARD!! - Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy
In 1988, Hagiwara debuted the BASTARD!! manga for the first time in Weekly Shonen Jump. Since then, the series has been serialized in an erratic fashion in the magazine and, later, in Ultra Jump beginning in 2001. In March of 2012, Shueisha published the 27th collected book volume of the manga, and there are currently more than 30 million copies of the series in circulation.
Although the BASTARD!! manga had been made available in English by Viz Media, the company decided to stop publishing the series after the 19th volume. The company decided not to publish the 20th volume in English and canceled the release.
From 1992-1993, a six-episode original video anime (OVA) was adapted from the manga. The anime was made available for purchase on home video by Geneon Entertainment, also known as Pioneer.
