Rooster Teeth's popular animated series RWBY will receive its first feature film in 2023. It was announced this week to be a crossover story with The Justice League. The film will be animated and produced by the same team as the web series in partnership with Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
A seven-issue RWBY x Justice League comic miniseries — written by Marguerite Bennett with art from Aneke, Stephanie Pepper and Emanuela Lupacchino — was released in 2021. However, the upcoming film will feature a completely new and original story.
Although the DC Animated Universe has attempted a number of movies that use a similar animation in the style of anime, such as Batman: Gotham Knights and Batman: Ninja, there's never been an official film that saw the Justice League cross over into anime and come in direct contact with those anime heroes. With RWBY and the Justice League already among the most popular franchises, seeing the two come together in a crossover film should be incredible to witness.
The announcement of the RWBY and Justice League crossover film came during the RTX Animation Festival this past week. The RWBY panel featured writers and directors Kerry Shawcross and Eddy Rivas were joined by supervising producer Laura Yates and lead voice actresses Lindsay Jones (Ruby Rose), Barbara Dunkelman (Yang Xiao), Arryn Zech (Blake Belladonna) and Kara Eberle (Weiss Schnee). In addition to the crossover film announcement, the panel featured a teaser and sneak peek at RWBY Volume 9, which is set to premiere in early 2023.
After the harrowing events of Volume 8, our heroines are thrust into an unknown world–the Ever After! However, once Team RWBY explores this strange and mysterious realm, they quickly discover it might not be quite as unknown as they first assumed. As they journey to find a way back home, they'll have to overcome some of their toughest challenges yet–the struggle of their own identities, and whether or not they're equipped to stop Salem.
There's also a new game coming out that's inspired by the animated series. Rooster Teeth, indie game studio WayForward (Shantae), and game publisher/developer Arc System Works (Guilty Gear -Strive-) are collaborating on a new 2D action-adventure set in the RWBY universe, titled RWBY: Arrowfell. The game is set to arrive in Fall 2022 for PS5, PS4, Xbox SEries X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Check out the teaser for the game below.
