The Free! anime series originally debuted in 2013 with 12 episodes. It was followed by two more seasons of the anime, as well as numerous films including High Speed! Free! Starting DaysFree! Timeless MedleyFree! Take Your Marks, as well as specials. There was even a prequel that introduced us to the cast while in middle school! Free! -the Final Stroke- is set to be the final chapters in the anime series.

The anime is loosely based upon the light novel High Speed! by Kōji Ōji. Free! takes place in Iwatobi, Japan. The story revolves around high school student Haruka Nanase, a gifted swimmer, and his friends as they revitalize Iwatobi High School's swim team. The second season (Free! Eternal Summer) follows Haruka during his senior year of high school, while season three (Free! Dive to the Future) finds Haruka attending Hidaka University and his swimming career.
