Kaiju No. 8 is ending on the big screen. TOHO animation announced on Saturday that the final arc of the anime will be told in a theatrical film, Kaiju No. 8: The Final Mission, which is set to open in Japan in 2027. The news came with a super teaser visual and a short teaser video, both carrying the tagline "The era of humans is over."
The official account billed the film as the series' conclusion and called it a monster-sized anime that has shaken the world, finally coming to an end. Check out the announcement down below:
A Super Teaser Visual And Video
The super teaser visual was drawn by the anime's art director, Shinji Kimura, and it leans hard into the end-of-the-world tone of the tagline. TOHO animation also released a short teaser video alongside it, which you can watch here:
The film was revealed at the Defense Force Boot Camp in Tachikawa, a cast event held at Tachikawa Stage Garden. Masaya Fukunishi, the voice of Kafka Hibino, also shared a comment about the announcement. No story details, additional staff, or a firm date in 2027 have been revealed yet.
Production I.G And Shigeyuki Miya Return
Shigeyuki Miya is directing the film at Production I.G, the same director and studio behind the TV anime. That should be welcome news for anyone who liked the look of the series, since the kaiju designs and the giant-scale battles have been the show's biggest selling point from the start.
The anime first premiered on TV Tokyo in April 2024 with 12 episodes. It made history as one of the first anime to stream live worldwide on X, and Crunchyroll streamed it around the world. A compilation film, Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon, played in theaters in the United States and Canada in April 2025 through Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment, ahead of the second season, which premiered in July 2025.
The franchise has stayed busy since. The Narumi's Week at Work shorts started in September, focusing on the First Division captain's very lazy downtime, and the four-episode run gave fans a lighter look at the Defense Force between missions.
The Manga Already Reached Its Finale
The film will adapt the ending of Naoya Matsumoto's manga, which ran on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ service from July 2020 to July 2025. Viz Media publishes the manga in English.
The story follows Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old who cleans up kaiju remains for a living after giving up on his dream of joining the Japan Defense Force. When a strange, small kaiju gets inside him, Kafka gains the power to turn into a kaiju himself, and the Defense Force labels him Kaiju No. 8. From there, he finally gets his shot at the force while hiding the monster living inside him.
Turning the last arc into a movie instead of a third TV season is a big bet, but it fits how much the series has leaned on spectacle. The final chapters of the manga are packed with large-scale battles, and a theatrical budget could give those fights the room they need.
The franchise has also moved into games. Kaiju No. 8 the Game launched on mobile in August 2025 and arrived on Steam in October 2025, so there is still plenty to dig into while the wait for the movie goes on.
Would you rather see Kaiju No. 8 end with a big theatrical film like this, or would a full third TV season have been the better way to wrap it up?
