Dub fans can finally watch the Saga of Tanya the Evil movie in English. Crunchyroll added an English dub track for Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie earlier this week, more than seven years after the film opened in Japan. Until now, the movie had only been available on the service in Japanese with English subtitles.
Crunchyroll has streamed the film since September 2019. Before that, it brought the movie to more than 500 theaters in the United States in May 2019 as a one-night event, which also featured an interview with director Yutaka Uemura. Check out Crunchyroll's official preview for the film below:
What The Movie Is About
The film picks up right after the first TV season. It is the year UC 1926, and Major Tanya Degurechaff's 203rd Air Mage Battalion has just won the battle in the south against the Republic's remaining forces. The battalion expects a vacation after coming home victorious, but special orders from Staff HQ arrive as soon as they get back. There are signs of a large-scale military buildup near the border between the Empire and the Federation, and a desperate Empire is about to fan the flames of war again.
At the same time, a multinational volunteer army led by the Commonwealth has entered Federation territory. Among its soldiers is Warrant Officer Mary Sue, a young girl who has taken up arms to bring the Empire to justice for killing her father. Her grudge against Tanya, the so-called Devil of the Rhine, drives much of the film.
The English Dub Cast
Monica Rial returns as Tanya, a role she has voiced since the first season's English dub in 2017. The movie also brings back Jeannie Tirado as Visha, J. Michael Tatum as Erich, Greg Dulcie as Kurt, and Tia Ballard as Mary Sue. Jason Douglas voices Hans von Zettour, the part he took over from Mark Stoddard for the Season 2 dub.
The rest of the cast includes Barry Yandell as Loria, David Matranga as William, Tyson Rinehart as Meybert, Daman Mills as Weiss, Jeff Johnson as Grantz, Alex Hom as Thon, Seth Magill as Tospan, Gerard Caster as Wustemann, Larry Brantley as Josef, and Chris Wehkamp as Koenig. Jeremy Inman directed the dub, with Aaron Campbell serving as assistant director. In Japanese, the film stars Aoi Yuki as Tanya, Saori Hayami as Visha, and Haruka Tomatsu as Mary Sue.
A Big Year For Tanya
The movie dub caps off a busy stretch for the franchise. Last month, Crunchyroll also started streaming an English dub for The Saga of Tanya the Evil: Operation Desert Pasta, a 17 minute special that debuted during a livestreamed franchise event in June 2021 and joined Crunchyroll's library that same month.
The bigger news was Saga of Tanya the Evil II, the long-awaited second season, which premiered on the AT-X channel on July 8 and wrapped up on September 23. Studio NUT returned to animate it, with Takayuki Yamamoto taking over as director from Uemura and Kenta Ihara back on series composition. MYTH & ROID performed the opening theme, "Why? RED induction," while Aoi Yuki sang the ending theme "Weiter! Weiter!" in character as Tanya. Crunchyroll streamed the season and added an English dub in September:
The first season premiered in January 2017 and ran for 12 episodes. Crunchyroll streamed it as it aired, while Funimation streamed an English dub. NUT also animated the movie, which opened in Japan on February 8, 2019, with Uemura directing.
The Source Material
The Saga of Tanya the Evil began in 2010 as a web novel by Carlo Zen on the Arcadia website. Enterbrain picked it up and started publishing it as a light novel series in October 2013, with illustrations by Shinobu Shinotsuki, and 14 volumes have been released so far. Yen Press publishes the novels in English, and Monica Rial even narrated the English audiobook of the first volume.
A manga adaptation by Chika Tojo has run in Kadokawa's Comp Ace magazine since April 2016 and reached its 35th volume in August 2026. Yen Press also publishes the manga in English. By May 2020, the novels and manga had more than 6.5 million copies in circulation, and Tanya and her battalion also appeared in chibi form next to the casts of KonoSuba, Overlord, and Re:Zero in the crossover anime Isekai Quartet, which began airing in April 2019.
