Pokemon GO is handing players a free perfect IV Mewtwo as part of its ongoing 10th anniversary celebrations. The limited Timed Research is available now and runs through early September, requiring only a handful of simple tasks to claim one of the game’s strongest Psychic-type attackers.

The research became available on August 12 at 4:00 PM PDT and remains open until September 6 at 11:59 PM local time. Completing it rewards an encounter with a Mewtwo that has a CP of 2387, corresponding to perfect IVs. The Legendary also comes with the third Mega Level already unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y, along with a special background featuring the Earth. In addition to the encounter, the tasks grant a Master Ball and 500 Mega Mewtwo Energy.

The requirements themselves are deliberately light. Players need only catch 10 Pokemon and power up Pokemon 10 times. Both objectives can be finished quickly during normal play, making the reward accessible even to trainers who do not raid frequently or spend heavily.

This free Mewtwo arrives after the Legendary played a major role in GO Fest: Global 2026 in July. That event introduced Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y and included Special Research featuring Zeraora. Some players ran into technical problems joining Mega Raids at the time, prompting Niantic and Scopely to offer a later do-over opportunity focused on Mega Mewtwo Y. The Pokemon was also expected to return during the GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale event in early September. The new Timed Research gives trainers an earlier and much simpler route to a powerful specimen without needing to battle in Mega Raids.

The gift doubles as a nod to an in-person event held in Times Square on July 9. Attendees at that celebration received a free hundo Mewtwo. Pokemon GO has clarified that players who already claimed the Times Square version can still complete the current Timed Research, though they will receive a Mewtwo with random IVs and adjusted rewards instead of a second perfect specimen. The game has also confirmed that Mewtwo featuring the Times Square background will return at a later date.

Mega Mewtwo Y ranks among the top Psychic attackers in Pokemon GO, particularly in raids and Master League scenarios where raw power and typing matter. Receiving one with perfect IVs and Mega energy already progressed removes several of the usual barriers such as raiding for candies, grinding Mega energy, and hoping for strong individual values. For many players, this single research line delivers a ready-to-use high-end attacker with minimal effort.

The offer fits into the broader Forever Forward season and the extended 10th anniversary programming. Beyond the free Mewtwo, the coming weeks include additional Mega Evolution debuts. Mega Starmie is scheduled to arrive on August 22. The Kalos starter Mega Evolutions are confirmed for the GO Fest: Mega Finale weekend on September 5 and 6. Together these additions continue the season’s focus on Mega Pokemon while giving players multiple ways to strengthen their teams.

Looking further ahead, Scopely has already outlined the next stretch of Community Days. A Community Day Classic is set for September 12, followed by additional dates in October and November. Specific featured Pokemon for those events have not yet been announced, but the early calendar provides a clear sense of the post-anniversary schedule. What are your waiting for? Go claim that maxed out Mewtwo now!

For players who missed strong Mewtwo opportunities during GO Fest or simply prefer not to rely on raiding, the current Timed Research is one of the most straightforward high-value rewards the game has offered in recent months. The window is generous with it being nearly four weeks but it is finite. Trainers who want the perfect IV Mega Mewtwo Y need to log in, complete the two short tasks, and claim the encounter before the research expires on September 6.

The free Legendary also serves as a reminder of how Pokemon GO continues to mark its tenth year with a mix of nostalgia and practical power spikes. A maxed-out Mewtwo with Mega potential handed out for catching and powering up a small number of Pokemon is an unusually direct gift. It costs nothing beyond a bit of regular playtime and delivers a Pokemon that remains relevant in multiple parts of the game.

As the Forever Forward season moves toward its final weeks and the Mega Finale approaches, this Timed Research stands out as one of the easiest ways to walk away with a genuinely strong addition to any collection. Players only need to catch 10 Pokemon, power up 10 times, and claim their reward before the September 6 deadline.
