Netflix and Legendary Pictures are partnering with Polygon Pictures (Godzilla: The Planet Eater, Tron: Uprising, Star Wars Resistance) to produce a new anime series based on the Pacific Rim film franchise. It seems the anime will be set in Australia and features a pair of sibling jaeger pilots attempting to survive and find their lost parents when multiple kaiju arrive at once.
Marvel veterans Craig Kyle (Hulk vs Wolverine, Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson ( Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow) are serving as showrunners.
Not much else is known about the series but perhaps Netflix is keeping details light for a reason. Pacific Rim fans are keen to find out where in the timeline the upcoming anime series takes place as continue to hold out hope for a third live-action installment.
First announced on November 7, 2018 and was confirmed for two seasons. Pacific Rim: The Black was originally slated to be released in 2020 before being pushed back to 2021. Executives as Legendary stated that the project would be one of the most expensive anime produced by Netflix.
The teaser trailer also reveals that Pacific Rim: The Black will premiere on Netflix on March 4.
There was a time when Kaiju rose from the Pacific Rim only to encounter gigantic robots, Jaegers, built to fight them back. That time has passed. Now, Australia has been overrun by Kaiju, forcing the evacuation of an entire continent. Left behind, teenage siblings Taylor and Hayley embark on a desperate search for their missing parents, teaching themselves to pilot a battered, long-abandoned Jaeger to help in their quest and give them even the slightest hope of surviving.
