One of the strangest designs to come out of the crossover between Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion is heading west. Tamashii Nations has opened a US listing for its S.H.MonsterArts Evangelion Test Type-01 "G" Awakening Form, a figure that imagines Unit-01 after being overtaken by Godzilla's cells, through the official Godzilla store, with shipping expected early next year.
Tamashii Nations first revealed the figure in the summer, ahead of Japanese preorders opening on July 10th:
What If G-Cells Were Injected Into Unit-01?
The design comes from the Godzilla vs. Evangelion project and is built on a simple but unsettling premise. Tamashii Nations describes it as being "conceived based on the premise of 'What if G Cells were injected into EVANGELION TEST TYPE-01?'"
The result keeps the silhouette of Shinji Ikari's Eva but works Godzilla's features into almost every part of the body, including black coloring, a large dorsal fin and a long tail. Tamashii says "The contrasting textures of the mechanical Evangelion and the biological Godzilla have been reproduced in meticulous detail."
The idea of Godzilla's cells taking over another life form has deep roots in the kaiju franchise. The 1989 film Godzilla vs. Biollante introduced the concept that Godzilla's cells could be spliced into other organisms, and the "G" Awakening Form applies that concept to the most famous Eva of all.
Paint, Poses And A Heat Ray
The figure blends Unit-01's signature purple with Godzilla's black, and the dorsal fins are painted with a gradient to give them a lifelike, monstrous finish. The core on its chest is reproduced in metallic red, which makes it stand out against the darker body.
Tamashii says the figure keeps its proportions while offering a wide range of natural motion, so it can be posed in roaring stances or low, crouching positions that suit a kaiju better than a mecha. It stands about 150mm, or roughly 5.9 inches, tall, which puts it in line with the rest of the S.H.MonsterArts range.
The set includes the main body, an original heat ray effect part, a dedicated base for the effect and a spare horn part. The US listing calls the effect a Fiery Breath, but either way it lets collectors recreate Unit-01 unleashing Godzilla's signature attack.
Tamashii also notes that the sculpt was newly made with the full cooperation of X-Plus, the first company to turn the "G" Awakening Form into a three-dimensional figure.
Release Details
In Japan, the figure was sold through the Tamashii Web Shop for ¥17,600, with preorders running from July 10th to August 30th and a December 2026 release. The US listing on the official Godzilla store prices it at $160 with an estimated ship date of January 2027, and the page currently offers a notification option rather than open orders. Sideshow also lists the figure at $160, with shipping expected between January and March 2027.
A Crossover With A Decade Of History
The Godzilla vs. Evangelion collaboration between Toho and Khara began around the release of Shin Godzilla in 2016, a film co-directed by Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno and his longtime collaborator Shinji Higuchi. The partnership produced a long line of merchandise from multiple licensees.
Anno's connection is what makes the pairing feel natural. He created Neon Genesis Evangelion, which first aired as a TV anime in 1995, and later led the Rebuild of Evangelion films at his own studio, Khara, wrapping them up with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time in 2021. His take on Godzilla brought a similar sense of scale and dread to Toho's monster, so seeing the two worlds literally merge in figure form is a fun extension of that overlap.
The "G" Awakening Form was one of its earliest and most memorable designs. X-Plus and Bandai released it as a roughly 38cm Toho 30cm Series figure in January 2017, sold exclusively through Premium Bandai and the Evangelion Store. More recently, the design returned earlier this year in a metallic DefoReal version.
Tamashii has been busy with Evangelion in general, too. An S.H.Figuarts Shinji Ikari figure is due out next month, which means collectors could soon line up the pilot alongside the most monstrous version of his Eva.
Would you add the Godzilla-infused Unit-01 to your shelf, or do you prefer the classic purple Eva without the kaiju makeover?
