The world we live in has found a massive fascination with the battle royale genre; a winner takes all bout to become the last person standing and a chance never to have to endure whatever the circumstances may be again. From video games like Fortnite and Apex to movies like The Hunger Games and The Hunt, people can't seem to get enough of the genre!
In 2010, mangaka Haro Aso may have been ahead of the curve with his creation, Alice in Borderland. A series about a group of people who have to participate in a morbid game and win to return home, or deny participating and being killed immediately. The book released in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday S and ended six years later with 18 total compiled volumes.
The series has been a huge success since its launch and has spawned a couple of spin-offs and a few anime OVAs. A live-action adaption has also been confirmed that is set to release on Netflix next month. A brand new trailer has recently been released that features a lot of new footage and a specific release date!
Looking to be a very faithful adaption to the source, Alice in Borderland promises to deliver on the thrills and stakes found in the manga. We would love to hear your thoughts on the new trailer in the usual spot!
The manga centers on Ryōhei Arisu (pronounced the same as "Alice" in Japanese), a male high school student who is irritated with his intolerable everyday life. One night, he tags along with his bad friends Karube and Chōta to hang out in town. However, the town is suddenly covered in giant fireworks. When he comes to his senses, Ryōhei notices that no one else is around. Finding themselves in a different world, Ryōhei, Karube, and Chōta are forced to participate in survival games or die right off the bat. The three fight to live, as well as to find a way back to their own world.
Alice in Borderland premieres on Netflix on December 10th!
