Takashi Okazaki has won an Emmy Award for his character design work on the Star Wars: Visions short "The Duel: Payback." The Television Academy announced the winners of its juried categories for the 78th Annual Emmy Awards, with Okazaki taking the prize for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation.
The award recognizes individual craft contributions in animation and is decided by a peer panel rather than the full voting membership used for most Primetime categories. It will be presented on September 6 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. An edited version of the juried awards presentation is scheduled to air on September 12 on FXX, ahead of the main Emmy ceremony on September 14.
"The Duel: Payback" appears in Star Wars: Visions Volume 3, which debuted on Disney+ in October 2025. The short serves as a direct sequel to "The Duel," one of the standout entries from the first Visions anthology released in 2021. Okazaki designed the characters for both films, giving the Ronin storyline a consistent visual identity across the two shorts.
Takanobu Mizuno directed "The Duel: Payback" at Kamikaze Douga + ANIMA. The story follows the wandering Ronin as he confronts a powerful adversary known as the Grand Master, a twisted Jedi driven by revenge. With help from unexpected allies, the Ronin faces a confrontation that builds on the themes and style established in the original short. The distinctive character designs, rooted in a blend of samurai aesthetics and Star Wars iconography, have been one of the defining elements of the Ronin films.
Okazaki’s win adds to the growing list of formal recognition for the Visions project. The anthology series has given Japanese anime studios and creators significant creative freedom to interpret the Star Wars galaxy through their own visual and narrative approaches. Volume 1 featured exclusively Japanese productions. Later volumes expanded the range of studios while still continuing select storylines from the original shorts. Volume 3 specifically picked up the threads of "The Duel," "Village Bride," and "The Ninth Jedi."
In addition to Okazaki’s juried win, another Volume 3 short received attention in the competitive categories. Shinya Ōhira and david production’s "Black" was nominated for Outstanding Animated Program. That nomination placed a Visions entry in one of the higher-profile animation categories, even though the juried craft award is the one that produced a win for the anthology this year.
The timing of the recognition coincides with continued expansion of the Visions brand. Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, a limited series that develops the story first introduced in the Volume 1 short of the same name, premiered on Disney+ and Hulu on August 5.
