Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend is now in theaters across Japan. The film opened on Friday (October 16th), and it is the end of the road for the anime. The official site calls it the conclusion of the series, promising that the remaining mysteries of Adolescence Syndrome will finally be answered. CloverWorks is animating it, just like every other part of the franchise.
The official anime account has been leaning into the finale all weekend, opening its latest post with "#青ブタ 完結へ。", which translates to "Aobuta, to its conclusion." Check it out below:
The line in the middle reads "Find Toko Kirishima, Mai is in danger," which sums up the setup pretty well.
The Story Of Dear Friend
The film picks up with Sakuta Azusagawa in his second year of university, still hunting for Toko Kirishima, the mysterious internet singer whose songs he believes are triggering Adolescence Syndrome. On April 1st, Mai Sakurajima makes a shocking confession on stage. "Actually, I am Toko Kirishima," she tells a cheering crowd, in a scene Sakuta already saw in a dream on Christmas Eve.
From there, things that everyone once saw in their dreams start coming true one after another. The "#dreaming" posts that predicted those dreams disappear, Sakuta's memory of events stops matching the world around him, and a message arrives from a Sakuta in another possible world telling him to stop Toko Kirishima before reality gets rewritten. To put the world back, Sakuta goes looking for her. The official synopsis calls it a story about overcoming Adolescence Syndrome, and the film is set in Fujisawa and Yokohama.

Eight Years Of Rascal Does Not Dream
The anime started with Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai in October 2018, a 13-episode TV series that turned the franchise into one of the most talked about romance anime of that season. It went straight into the film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl in June 2019, which wrapped up Shoko's story.
The series came back in 2023 with two more films, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid, which closed out the high school arc. Then Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, the second TV season, started the university arc in July 2025. Dear Friend makes it two TV seasons and four films, all from CloverWorks.
Ending a series like this in theaters fits it well. A lot of the best Rascal moments have been the quieter ones, and a full film gives the last chapter some room to breathe.
The official site does not list any screenings outside Japan yet, so international fans will have to keep an eye out for a release in their region to see how it all ends.
Are you going to see Dear Friend as soon as it reaches your region, or wait until you can watch the whole series back to back?
