Gensokyo is coming to the tabletop in English for the first time. LionWing Publishing is localizing Gensou Narratograph: The Roleplaying Game Based on Touhou, the official tabletop RPG set in the world of Touhou Project, and the English edition is planned for 2027.
The game was first published in Japan by Kadokawa in 2023. LionWing announced the localization earlier this month with a short list of highlights that should get any Touhou fan's attention.
Play As Reimu, Marisa And More
In Gensou Narratograph, players take on the roles of established residents of Gensokyo rather than creating original characters from scratch. LionWing specifically names Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame as options, and the rulebook includes 30 characters from the franchise in total.
The game is designed for one to four players plus a Game Master, and all you need beyond the book is a few six-sided dice and your imagination. LionWing describes the experience as a mix of "cozy slice-of-life storytelling" and Danmaku Duels inspired by the series' famous bullet-hell battles. That balance makes a lot of sense for Touhou, where everyday life at the Hakurei Shrine and spectacular spell card fights have always gone hand in hand.
A Replay Starring ZUN
The most unusual feature might be the replay. In Japanese tabletop culture, a replay is a written record of an actual play session, presented like a script so readers can see how a game plays out at the table. The English rulebook will include a 100-page replay featuring ZUN, the creator of Touhou Project, as one of the participants.
That alone makes the book a collector's item for longtime fans. ZUN also wrote flavor text for a newly drawn map of Gensokyo that features 21 locales players can visit, and the rulebook adds brand new character art on top of that.
Editions And When You Can Order
LionWing plans to release Gensou Narratograph in three editions:
- A hardcover edition available only during the ordering window
- A second hardcover with painted edges, also exclusive to the ordering window
- A softcover edition planned for retail
Orders open through a BackerKit campaign that launches on November 3, and the pre-launch page is already live for anyone who wants a notification. LionWing has been teasing the campaign with Gensokyo favorites like Patchouli and Flandre, and the publisher says it will share more about the game, its editions and how to order in the coming weeks. Pricing has not been announced yet.
Why This Matters For Touhou Fans
Touhou Project began in 1995 when ZUN, working as Team Shanghai Alice, released Touhou: Highly Responsive to Prayers on the PC-98. The franchise has since grown into one of the biggest doujin series in the world, with a long line of mainline shooters, spinoffs and a massive amount of fan-made music, games and art.
Official English releases took a long time to arrive. Playism released Touhou: Double Dealing Character in May 2015 as the first official English release of a mainline game, and Western fans have slowly gained access to more of the franchise since then. An officially licensed English tabletop RPG is another big step, especially for fans who have always wanted to tell their own stories in Gensokyo with friends.
For anime and game fans who have never tried a TTRPG, this could also be a friendly entry point. Playing as characters you already know removes a lot of the setup that scares people away from tabletop games, and the slice-of-life focus means sessions do not have to be all combat. It is another sign that anime-adjacent tabletop gaming is having a moment in the West, following news that Weiss Schwarz is getting an online version.
