Director Yuji Yanase died on August 22 at 59. MAHO FILM and the committees behind his two summer 2026 series made the news public on September 2. The studio said the cause was a myocardial infarction. A funeral already happened with close relatives only, at the family's request.
Yanase was still listed as director on two shows that began in July. The World's Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country's Novice Seeker started July 5. The Insipid Prince's Furtive Grab for the Throne started July 6. Both are MAHO FILM productions. Both were in the middle of their TV runs when the statements went up.
MAHO FILM president Junji Murata signed the studio notice. It said Yanase had steered the company's work as a director from the studio's early years, then joined as a staff member in 2023 and kept leading productions on the floor. The company asked that flowers, condolence money, and visits be declined, again at the family's request.
Yanase's wife, Masami Koiwa, posted from his X account after the studio notice. She wrote that he died of an acute myocardial infarction on August 22, and that the shock was still settling in at home. "It was so sudden that the family still doesn't have a real sense of it, but I think he himself is the most surprised right now," she said. She thanked people who had worked with him, watched the shows, and spent time with him.
The Rearguard committee called the news sudden and said staff were struggling with it. The statement thanked Yanase for leading that series with what it described as passion and a warm manner on set. The Insipid Prince committee posted its own note the same day. That group said the loss was still hard to accept and thanked him for the care he put into the production.
Rearguard follows Arihito, a man reborn in the Labyrinth Country who lands the support class everyone underestimates. Attack, defense, and recovery all sit on that one role. The light novel and manga already had an audience before the TV adaptation. Insipid Prince is the other July title, a court-intrigue fantasy about a prince who looks checked out while he works the succession fight from the side. Yanase had both of those rooms at once.
That double booking fit the last stretch of his career. After years as a freelancer and episode-level director, he became the director most closely tied to MAHO FILM's isekai slate. He directed In Another World With My Smartphone in 2017, If It's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord in 2019, both seasons of By the Grace of the Gods in 2020 and 2023, In the Land of Leadale in 2022, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1 in 2023, I'll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History in 2024, and Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra in 2025. Those shows are the reason a lot of weekly viewers know his name even if they never clocked the credit roll.
His first TV series as director was Himegoto in 2014. Before that he had already spent more than two decades in the trenches. Industry records put him on in-between work by 1988, including Akira, Kaze o Nuke!, and Doraemon the Movie: Nobita's Dorabian Nights. Key animation credits later included Macross 7, The Legend of Zorro, Tenchi Universe, and Tetsujin 28-go FX.
The middle of his career is a stack of animation-director and episode jobs on series people still quote. Saber Marionette J. Fancy Lala. Excel Saga. Hellsing. Chobits. Mezzo. Aria the Animation. Symphogear. Other Japanese reports add Shaman King, Fist of the North Star: Raoh Gaiden, Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's, Saint Seiya Omega, and the 2013 Danganronpa TV anime. He kept taking key animation, animation director, and episode director work even after the series-director jobs started landing.
That workload is part of how colleagues talked about him. On his own MAHO shows he often drew key animation himself, sometimes covering a large share of a cour while also directing and doing episode direction. One 2024 season tally that circulated among sakuga watchers put him at six solo key-animation episodes out of 13 on a show he was already running. "Interesting" is the word that fits that habit better than any speech about auteur branding. He treated the drawings as part of the director's job, not a task to hand off. That is a mindset many can appreciate and find honorable.
Some outlets noted he had appeared as a guest at Otakon 2026 only weeks before he died. The July premieres, the con date, and the August 22 death sit close together. The September 2 announcements arrived after the funeral, which is why the two airing series were already several episodes deep when most viewers heard.
MAHO FILM is a smaller Tokyo studio that built a lane in light-novel fantasy adaptations. Yanase was the person who made that lane look like a house style: clean character acting, readable action, and a schedule that kept titles coming year after year. Joining as an employee in 2023 made official a relationship that had already defined the catalog. Murata's note reads like a studio losing the director who taught the building how those shows get finished.
There is no public word yet on who steers the remaining Rearguard and Insipid Prince episodes. The committees thanked him and left the broadcast calendar as it stood. Summer cours do not pause easily once they are on air. Whatever the next credit says, the episodes already finished are the last ones that went through his room.
Yanase was born July 22, 1967. He died on his 59th year, one month after his birthday, with two series still listing him at the top of the staff.
