Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 has wrapped up another heartbreaking story in Night City, and fans are already wondering if there will be a third round. According to showrunner Bartosz Sztybor, the door is open, but it will take a lot for it to happen.
Speaking with ComicBook after the second season's release on Netflix, Sztybor explained that he and CD Projekt Red are not interested in making more Edgerunners just for the sake of it.
Season 3 Depends On The Stars Aligning
When asked whether a third season is possible, Sztybor did not rule it out.
"There's a lot of stories to tell in Night City and beyond, so you never know," he said. "But not only my, but I think the whole studio's approach is that there always needs to be a perfect story and a perfect director, artist, or a studio that will be able to pull off this story. So if the stars align and will be able to create something high quality again, then yes. But if there's no perfect story or no perfect director with his unique or her unique voice, then maybe it will be just two Edgerunners."
That is not a no, but it is far from a confirmation. The first season came together thanks to a very specific creative match between CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger, and the sequel brought in a new crew and a new story while still feeling connected to the original. Sztybor's comments suggest the team would rather leave things at two seasons than force out a third that does not live up to them.
Why Season 2 Was Never A Direct Sequel
Sztybor also explained that bringing David Martinez back was never on the table for the second season. He said the plan was always to tell a story that acted as a mirror and a dialogue with the first season, rather than a classic sequel.
"There was never an option to do a classic proper sequel, to resurrect David. No, no, we don't want to do things like that," he said, adding that he wanted to show there are always consequences to your choices, even after death.
That approach has clearly connected with fans. Edgerunners 2 has given Cyberpunk 2077 another boost, with CD Projekt Red releasing a Cyberpunk 2077 update themed around the new season, and the franchise is even getting an Edgerunners trading card set.
More Night City From Sztybor While You Wait
If you have already finished both seasons and need more of Sztybor's take on Night City, fans have been pointing to Cyberpunk 2077: Blackout, a four-issue miniseries from Dark Horse Comics that he wrote.
The story follows a braindance repairman who gets pulled into the darker side of Night City's DMS technology, which lets people play out self-prescribed dreams of fortune, hope and love. As the official description puts it, not everyone wants a happy ending, and the answer to pain comes in a blackout.
The series features art by Roberto Ricci and colors by Fabiana Mascolo, and the full run is collected in a 104-page trade paperback rated for ages 16 and up. One of the best things about it is that you do not need to have played the game or watched the anime to follow it. It is simply set in the same world, and it captures the same mix of style, sadness and violence that made Edgerunners such a hit.
Would you like to see Cyberpunk: Edgerunners return for a third season, or do you think the story should end at two?
