The first part of the new Made in Abyss theatrical series is almost here, and fans now know how long they will be spending in the Abyss. Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery has a runtime of 71 minutes, according to its listing on the TOHO Cinemas website, ahead of its release in Japan next Friday (October 23rd).
The film's full Japanese title is Theatrical Series Part 1: Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery (Mezameru Shinpi). It continues the story after the second TV season, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, with Riko and her friends inviting Faputa to join them as they head down to the Abyss's seventh layer.
Staff, Cast, And Trailer
Director Masayuki Kojima returns to lead the film at Kinema Citrus, with Kevin Penkin once again handling the music. It is based on the manga by Akihito Tsukushi, published by Takeshobo, and is distributed by ANIMEC with KADOKAWA.
The main cast is back too, with Miyu Tomita as Riko, Mariya Ise as Reg, Shiori Izawa as Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno as Faputa. Two new characters join the story. Takanori Hoshino plays Kuravari, a Black Whistle delver who prefers solo expeditions and greets people with an unusual "Dyahode." Sumire Morohoshi plays Tepaste, who gets separated from Kuravari, her senior, and ends up running into an expedition team called the Curse-Ship Fleet.
It has been reported that the theme song is "Chain of the Abyss," performed by Penkin featuring Mori Calliope.
The main trailer and the new cast members were revealed back in August, and you can watch it below:
Stay In Your Seat After The Credits
Moviegoers in Japan will also get a bonus. A mini anime called Hime-sama Nikki, centered on Faputa, will play after Awakening Mystery as a theater bonus. The official anime account has asked viewers to stay in their seats so they do not miss it:
New Stage Greetings And Talk Shows
The production team held a talk show at Machi Asobi in Tokushima today (October 18th), which was also streamed on ABEMA. Part of the film was shown there for the first time, and a batch of new announcements followed.
The biggest crowd pleaser is that Nanachi and Faputa are getting fluffy mascot costumes. They will debut at the opening weekend stage greetings, starting with a staff greeting at Shinjuku Wald 9 next Saturday (October 24th) after the 11:00 showing. That event features Tsukushi, Kojima, and producer Shinpei Yamashita.
The next day (October 25th), Tomita, Ise, Izawa, and Kuno will appear at 109 Cinemas Futakotamagawa for the 13:00 and 15:35 showings, with Natsuko Hara, the voice of Meinya, as MC. Tickets for each event cost 2,500 yen.
Two more rounds of thank-you talk shows were added for November. On November 1st, Hoshino will make his first appearance at events at Yokohama Burg 13 and Kawasaki Cinecitta, and on November 8th, Morohoshi will join talk shows at Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro and United Cinemas Toyosu. Some of those events will also include photo sessions with the new mascot costumes.
Ways To Catch Up Before Release
There are a few easy ways for fans in Japan to get ready. ABEMA is streaming all 12 episodes of the second season tonight from 18:00 to 24:00 JST, after AT-X aired the same marathon yesterday (October 17th). The manga app Takecomi is also making every chapter except the latest volume free to read for 24 hours starting today.
Made in Abyss first arrived as a TV anime in 2017, followed by the film Dawn of the Deep Soul in 2020 and the second season in 2022.
