The 86 anime is once again available on Crunchyroll. The streaming service re-added the series last Friday, several months after it had been quietly removed from the platform.

According to archived versions of Crunchyroll’s catalog, 86 disappeared from the service sometime between April 7 and May 23 of this year. No official announcement accompanied the delisting at the time. The show joins a small group of titles that were pulled from the platform earlier in 2026 without advance notice. Crunchyroll had previously removed at least seven other anime in a similar unannounced fashion.

86 originally premiered in April 2021 and ran for two cours. The first half aired in spring, with the second cours following in October of the same year. Crunchyroll carried the series in simulcast as it broadcast in Japan and later released an English dub. The adaptation quickly built a strong following for its grounded take on mecha conflict, sharp character work, and willingness to confront the human cost of war.

The story, based on Asato Asato’s light novel series, is set in the Republic of San Magnolia. The nation claims to fight an automated enemy using unmanned drones, but the truth is far darker. The so-called 86th District is home to young conscripts forced to pilot the drones under the command of handlers from the privileged districts. The narrative centers on the relationship between handler Vladilena Milizé and the processor known as Spearhead’s leader, Shinei Nouzen, as both confront the system that treats an entire group of people as disposable.

Yen Press publishes the light novels in English. Asato launched the series under Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko imprint in 2017, with illustrations by Shirabi and mechanical designs by I-IV. The novels reached their final arc in recent volumes, with the 14th book releasing in September 2025.

The return of 86 to Crunchyroll restores easy access for subscribers who had been looking for legal streaming options after the earlier removal. The series remains one of the stronger mecha and military dramas of the past several years, and its presence back on a major platform makes it simpler for both longtime fans and new viewers to watch.

No detailed explanation has been given for either the original delisting or the decision to reinstate the show. Licensing windows, regional rights, and catalog rotations occasionally lead to temporary removals even for well-regarded titles. In this case the gap lasted only a few months before the series reappeared.

For viewers who missed 86 during its original run or lost access earlier this year, the show is once again one click away on Crunchyroll. The two-cour adaptation continues to stand as a complete and self-contained story that expanded on the early volumes of Asato’s novels while leaving room for the source material’s later developments. Its return closes a brief period of unavailability and puts the series back in front of the platform’s audience.
