SHIN GODZILLA Opens To $6.1 Million In Japan

Shin Godzilla or Godzilla Resurgence as it's known in the West, opened to the tune of ¥625 million ($6.1 million) in Japan. Box office analysts say that's not exactly earth-shattering numbers.

Godizlla Resurgence opened in Japan this weekend and earned the equivalent of $6.1 million USD from 412,000 tickets sold.  For the first Japanese-produced Godzilla movie in 12 years, that figure is not exactly what TOHO was anticipating.  By comparison Gareth Edwards 2014 Godzilla film opened to $5 million in Japan.  While critics have been generally responsive to the  Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) directed kaiju film, some have criticized the feature for having too large of a cast (300+) and going too long between scenes featuring Godzilla.

Recently FUNimation announced that they've acquired the North American distribution rights for the film and plan to release the pic in US theaters before the end of 2016 though an exact date has not been specified.
