ABOUT AKB48
Founded in 2005, AKB48 (pronounced A.K.B. Forty-eight) is a Japanese idol girl group which derives its name from the Akihabara (Akiba for short) area in Tokyo, where the group's theater is located. Over the last ten years, the group's membership has expaned to 130 members, not including the spinoff groups  SKE48, NMB48, HKT48, NGT48 and JKT 48.  Producer Yasushi Akimoto came up with the concept of "idols you can meet" who can rotate members and perform simultaneously at several different events.

The group is one of the highest-earning musical performers in Japan, with 2013 sales of over $128 million.   As of December 2015 the group has sold over 41 million records, including over 36 million singles and over 5 millon albums.

As part of the contract the girls/idols sign with Akimoto, they are not allowed to date or have romantic relationships of any kind.  The large numbers of members are split up into different groups labeled as Team A, Team B, Team C, etc.  along with a trainee group. Once members age out of the group (usually in their mid-20s) a "graduation concert" is held to celebrate their pending departure.
