Two years after the reboot wrapped, Spice & Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf has a window for its second season. The official site released a second teaser visual today and confirmed a 2027 broadcast.
The official post is short: a visual and a year. No season, no episode total, and no word on how many cours it runs.
The staff sheet, as reported by Anime News Network: Takeo Takahashi returns as chief director and Passione returns as the studio. Hijiri Sanpei, who directed the first season, is back with Nobuyoshi Nagayama and Takahiro Majima joining as directors. Koji Haneda returns on character designs alongside Rina Sugimoto.
Kevin Penkin is composing again, and for a lot of viewers that's the best news here. His score did a LOT of the heavy lifting on the 2024 series, which spends most of its running time on two people talking about grain prices and somehow makes that gripping.
Ami Koshimizu and Jun Fukuyama return as Holo and Kraft Lawrence, with Mai Nakahara back as Norah Arendt. No English cast details have been released.
The 2024 series ran 25 episodes across two straight cours, from April to September, and adapted roughly the first five light novels plus a short story. It closed on the Tereo village arc, with Lawrence and Holo pulling the village clear of a poisoned-wheat scandal, so there's a great deal of Isuna Hasekura's original run still unadapted.
Hasekura's light novels ran 24 volumes through Dengeki Bunko between 2006 and 2023, with the original saga concluding at volume 17. The 2008 anime only ever adapted four of those volumes across two seasons, and famously skipped volume four entirely. That older adaptation ran 12 episodes a season and stopped in 2009, which is why the 2024 reboot started over from volume one instead of continuing it.
The second season was greenlit almost immediately, announced on September 23rd, 2024, the day after the finale aired.
Passione has had a full slate in the meantime, and 25 episodes is a lot of work for a studio that size, so three years between a greenlight and a broadcast year is a fairly typical pace. Chief director, studio, character designer, composer and both leads are all returning.
2027 is the first date that's been available regarding the second season since the finale. Which volumes of the light novel it covers is what will decide how much of Hasekura's run finally makes it to screen.
How far into the novels do you want season 2 to go?
