The official website for Vinland Saga has released another Season 2 trailer, which promotes the opening date for the series as January 9, 2023. Crunchyroll has acquired the streaming rights to stream the second season of the popular anime series Vinland Saga from Japan in more than 200 countries and territories around the world at the same time.
Vinland Saga is based on a Japanese historical manga of the same name written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura and published by Kodansha. The 24-episode first season began airing in 2019 and was animated by Wit Studio. The 1st season of the anime adaption was a huge success, with some critics even declaring it the best anime series of 2019! The production for the second season was announced in July 2021 by Twin Engine.
The director, Shūhei Yabuta, and character designer, Takahiko Abiru, are both returning from the first season. The second season of Vinland Saga has been made into another 24-episode series, animated and produced by MAPPA. As with the first season, Hiroshi Seko wrote the screenplay; Takahiko Abiru designed the characters and oversaw animation; Yusuke Takeda, Kentaro Onuki, and Izumi Hirabayashi did the art direction; and Yutaka Yamada wrote the music. "River" by Anonymouz has been chosen as the opening theme.
The title "Vinland Saga" refers to a region mentioned in two different Norse sagas. However, Vinland Saga opens in an England ruled by the Danes at the turn of the 11th century and centers on the Danish invaders of England, also known as Vikings. The plot revolves around the historical adventurer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior who serves under the group of mercenaries responsible for his father's death, and a dramatization of King Cnut the Great's ascent to power.
The 2nd season begins in Denmark's southernmost Jutland peninsula, just as a new millennium begins. Thorfinn feels like his life has no meaning after the death of his lifelong nemesis. Ketil, a farming landowner, bought Thorfinn as a slave for the job of cleaning up and revamping his farmland. On the farm, Thorfinn meets Einar, a young man who, like him, was once a slave. The meeting of Einar leads him to finally confront his sins and begin to find fulfillment and satisfaction with his life. Canute, who became King of England, seeks to expand his realm in order to establish what he calls "the promised land.”
The official website for Vinland Saga's 2nd Season lists both Netflix and Crunchyroll as streaming the season outside of China and Asia.
