It looks like the live-action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) manga is getting close to choosing their lead role.  The field has been narrowed down to three actresses; Maika Monroe (It Follows, Independence Day: Resurgence), Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials), and Zendaya (K.C. Undercover, Spider-Man: Homecoming). Zendaya's Shake It Up co-star Bella Thorne also apparently tested for the role, according to Variety.

James Cameron was originally set to direct the live-action Battle Angel Alita, but had to turn the project over to Sin City director Robert Rodriguez due to his commitment to the upcoming Avatar sequels.

20th Century Fox is in the middle of negotating the film's budget according to The Hollywood Reporter. No release date has been set for the film as the project has yet to be officially greenlit, but we do have the synopsis below.

Set in the 26th century, ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL tells the story of Alita, an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. Within the context of an epic action-adventure, the film will explore a young woman’s journey of self-discovery and finding love.
