Netflix will begin streaming the third film in the Mononoke theatrical trilogy on September 29. Mononoke The Movie: Chapter III – The Curse of the Serpent (Gekijōban Mononoke Dai-San-Shō: Hebigami) receives a global release on the platform more than three months after its Japanese theatrical debut.
The film opened in Japan on May 29, 2026. It follows Mononoke The Movie: Phantom in the Rain, which premiered in July 2024, and Mononoke the Movie Trilogy: Chapter 2: The Ashes of Rage, which arrived in March 2025. Netflix already carries the first two entries, making the third film’s addition a continuation of the platform’s support for the project.
The trilogy reimagines the world of the original Mononoke anime series with a new Medicine Seller as its protagonist. Hiroshi Kamiya voices the lead role throughout the three films. The character is distinct from the Medicine Seller who appeared in the 2007 television series.
That original Medicine Seller made an unannounced cameo in the third film, voiced by Takahiro Sakurai. The appearance generated discussion among fans because Sakurai had been replaced in the lead role years earlier. In 2023, Twin Engine removed Sakurai from the project following public reports of an extramarital affair and stated that the decision aligned with the story’s focus on women’s suffering within the historical Ōoku setting. The studio did not publicize Sakurai’s return for the cameo before the film’s release. Planning producer Kōji Yamamoto later posted an apology for the handling of the information and announced he was stepping away from producing duties.
Despite the controversy surrounding the cameo, the film completed its theatrical run and is now moving to global streaming. The Mononoke franchise has also expanded beyond animation in recent years, with stage plays in 2023 and 2024 and a prequel stage production that ran in May. Actor Hirofumi Araki starred as the Medicine Seller in those productions and is set to voice a new Medicine Seller character named Ken no Tsurugi in a future project.
The Netflix release gives international audiences access to the complete film trilogy in a relatively short window. Viewers who have followed the first two movies on the service will be able to continue directly into the third chapter at the end of September. The series remains notable for its distinctive visual style, supernatural investigations, and atmospheric storytelling rooted in Japanese folklore and history.
Mononoke The Movie: Chapter III – The Curse of the Serpent arrives on Netflix globally on September 29. With the first two films already available, the third entry completes the current cinematic trilogy for a worldwide audience. Will you be watching it?
