Demon Lord Veltol's reign over the cyberpunk future is coming to an end. Fujimi Fantasia Bunko, the Kadokawa light novel imprint behind Demon Lord 2099, has announced that author Daigo Murasaki and illustrator Kureta's series will conclude with its sixth volume.

There is a notable twist to the news. According to the imprint's announcement two days ago, the final volume is being produced as an e-book and will be sold exclusively in digital form, rather than as a printed paperback like the previous five.

In the post, Fantasia Bunko describes the series as the story of a new kind of Demon Lord racing through the ultimate future world, and asks fans to look forward to a grand finale for the series that also found success as a TV anime. No release date has been announced for the sixth volume yet.

A Finale 2,099 Days In The Making

Fantasia Bunko had some fun with the timing of the reveal. A day earlier, the imprint teased that it would share news about a certain series' next volume, and after the announcement, it followed up with a second post noting that the reveal landed exactly 2,099 days after the first paperback volume went on sale.

That checks out. The first volume, Cyberpunk City Shinjuku, was released in Japan on January 20, 2021. It won the grand prize at the 33rd Fantasia Taisho, the imprint's new author contest. In that follow-up post, Fantasia Bunko thanked readers of the paperback volumes and viewers of the anime and asked them to wait a little longer for the conclusion.

Where The Story Stands

The fifth volume, Demon Lord City Shibuya, came out in Japan in November 2024, so fans have been waiting nearly two years to learn how Veltol's story ends. That book reunited the Demon Lord with his former vassal May, only to introduce a second May who is a scheming Demon Lord in her own right.

Yen Press publishes the light novels in English and has kept pace with the Japanese releases. Its edition of the fifth volume arrived on June 9th of this year. No English release of the sixth volume has been announced so far, and it remains to be seen how a digital-only Japanese release might affect plans for an English edition.

In its description of the series, Yen Press says that in the Shinjuku of the year 2099, "The dazzling prosperity of this massive city-state conceals a lurid darkness just beneath its surface." It adds that for Veltol, "To rule this brave new world, he will have to take hold of the future for himself!"

The story follows Veltol, who was slain by the hero Gram and revived 500 years later by his loyal vassal Machina. By then, his fantasy world of Alneath has merged with Earth, magic has fused with technology, and the once-feared ruler has to rebuild his power from scratch in the neon-soaked city of Shinjuku, including a stint as a livestreamer.

The Anime Adaptation

The novels were adapted into a 12-episode TV anime by J.C.Staff, directed by Ryo Ando, which aired in Japan from October to December 2024. Its episodes covered the story's Shinjuku and Akihabara arcs, the settings of the first two novels.

Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired and also produced an English dub, with Ian Sinclair voicing Veltol and Sarah Wiedenheft as Machina. A second season has not been announced.

The franchise also includes a manga adaptation illustrated by Yutaka Sakurai, which ran on Kadokawa's Shonen Ace Plus website and was collected in three volumes. Yen Press released it in English as a complete omnibus in December 2025.

Will you be reading Demon Lord 2099's final volume, and are you hoping the anime gets a second season to adapt the rest of the story?
