September 9 Is Now Officially Attack On Titan Day After Japan Registers The Day

Attack on Titan has a calendar square now. The Japan Anniversary Association registered September 9 as Attack on Titan Day, tied to the day Hajime Isayama’s manga opened on Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine on September 9, 2009. That first issue was the magazine’s launch book. Seventeen years later the date is a formal commemorative day, the same kind of private-association stamp that recently went to Gundam on April 7.

The official visual stacks the Nine Titans into a 9/9 silhouette: Founding, Colossal, Attack, Armored, Female, Beast, Jaw, Cart, War Hammer. The copy on the art: that day the human race remembers the boy who dreamed past the walls and the people who kept fighting for freedom. The Nine Titans passed down through blood. The story stayed in readers. September 9 is when it started.

The certificate came with a wood carving of a Titan holding a fish, a gag on Hokkaido’s kibori kuma bear statues. Kodansha filed the day. The franchise portal posted the art. The official X account ran the 9/9 mark and said events land on the day itself.

What happens on September 9

Magazine Pocket, Kodansha’s free manga app, opens chapters 1 through 99 for 99 hours. The window starts at midnight Japan time on Wednesday, September 9, and closes at 2:59 a.m. on September 13. That is most of the 139-chapter run, free, on a clock that is also a nine joke.

Magazine Shop, Weekly Shonen Magazine’s first standing store, puts Attack on Titan Day goods on sale the same date. The line uses the new commemorative visual plus new Isayama drawings of Eren, Levi, and Erwin in formal clothes.

A special livestream starts at 9:30 p.m. Japan time on September 9. That is 8:30 a.m. Eastern, 5:30 a.m. Pacific. Yuki Kaji (Eren Yeager), Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman), and Hiro Shimono (Connie Springer) are booked. Platform details were still pending on the official X account when the day was announced. Kodansha said the stream will carry new information about the series. No title, no format, no studio name attached to that line yet.

A themed café is already running in Japan from September 3 through October 12, overlapping the first Attack on Titan Day.

Why the date of 9/9

Nine Titans. Chapter 99 as the free cutoff. 99 hours. 9:30 p.m. start. Isayama built a story that used that number as machinery. The anniversary association just put it on a plaque. Bessatsu Shonen Magazine’s first issue is the historical hook. Hopefully that makes enough sense.

The manga is now finished. The anime is also finished under MAPPA after Wit Studio’s early seasons. What the September 9 stream can actually announce is the big question fans are wondering. Official language is "new information." Do not read a sequel into that until someone says the words on the broadcast. However a spin-off could be possible.

For readers outside Japan, Magazine Pocket’s 99-chapter window is the easiest on-ramp to reading the manga if you can use the app. The shop goods are local. The livestream is the worldwide appointment if they post a YouTube or Nico link before Wednesday night in Tokyo.

Attack on Titan Day is not a national public holiday. It is a registered commemorative date. Stores and the app are doing the work. Kaji, Ishikawa, and Shimono are the faces. Isayama’s new formal portraits are the merch hook.

September 9 is five days out from this writing. The story that started in a new magazine’s first issue now has a yearly stamp and a 99-hour reread.
