Square Enix has released a new documentary series following the making of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Released in April, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was met with rave reviews and is considered a "Must Play" game and an early contender for 2024's Game of the Year. Rebirth is the second game in Square Enix's planned trilogy that remakes the original Final Fantasy VII game that was released on the first PlayStation in 1997.

Remaking a game of that caliber was surely no easy task and now the new Inside the Final Fantays VII Rebirth documentary will peel back the curtain on the game's development and give fans a behind-the-scenes look through the eyes of the legendary development team including Director Naoki Hamaguchi, Producer Yoshinori Kitase Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura, Story & Scenario Kazushige Nojima, and others.

The four-party documentary series is currently available to watch on the Square Enix YouTube channel for free. Each episode runs between 15 and 20 minutes and focuses on a different aspect of the game.

The first episode, which you can watch below, covers the environment, art, and music in the game. You'll hear from director Naoki Hamaguchi, creative director Tetsuya Nomura, art director Shintaro Takai, composer Mitsuto Suzuki and more.

In this four-part documentary series, dive deep into the creation of this new, standalone RPG with candid insights and never-before-heard stories from a lineup of the series’ directors, artists, designers and voice talent. This series offers fans and newcomers a backstage pass to hear secrets about the game’s vast and vibrant world, the powerful bonds between party members and the rich, multi-faceted stories and quests that await in this legendary adventure.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second part of a trilogy of games that remakes the original Final Fantasy VII. The game picks up directly after the events of 2020's Final Fantasy VII Remake which covers up to the party’s escape from Midgar, and goes deeper into the events occurring in Midgar than the original game.

The synopsis for the sequel reads:

After escaping from the dystopian city of Midgar, Cloud and his friends set out on a journey across the planet. New adventures await in a vibrant and vast world – sprint across grassy plains on a Chocobo and explore expansive environments

Rebirth continues Cloud and his party's adventures in an expansive open-world as they search for Sephiroth and explore the beautiful, expansive regions of the world. Although it's technically a continuation of the first game, it's developed as a standalone adventure that is welcoming for fans and newcomers.
