Day three of Netflix's Geeked Week was all about animation and one of the highlights of today was the first trailer for Studio Trigger's original anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Set in the same universe as CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 game, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a standalone, 10-episode story "about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future."
The trailer is brief but intense and jam-packed with action. It does a good job of showcasing Studio Trigger's signature, vibrant style. Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red produced the series with a creative team formed of talent from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunter and Cyberpunk 2077.
The series tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City — a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he stays alive by becoming an edgerunner — a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.
Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare) directed the series along with assistant director Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare). Production was led by a star-studded team that includes creative director Hiromi Wakabayashi (Kill la Kill), character designer Yoh Yoshinari (Little Witch Academia, BNA: Brand New Animal) and Yuto Kaneko (Little Witch Academia). Yoshiki Usa (SSSS.GRIDMAN, Promare) and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare) adapted the screenplay while Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) composed the original score.
Cyberpunk 2077 may not have lived up to the lofty expectations set forth by CD Projekt Red, but it helped establish a unique and fascinating world with a rich backstory. In addition to the trailer, Netflix also shared an exclusive clip. If you played Cyberpunk 2077, the scene might seem familiar to you.
This clip features a world-premiere look at Cyberpunk Edgerunners - specifically, episode 104, where our main gang faces off against Night City's notorious Maelstrom Gang. Core gamers will recognize the anime adaptation from a similar Cyberpunk 2077 video game scene, wherein protagonist V faces off against the Maelstrom crew in a main-storyline quest.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is expected to premiere on Netflix this September 2022.
