Girls at Starlight Academy, a prestigious school with both middle and high school branches, are given the opportunity to learn to become idols and compete in a variety of auditions, including live shows, fashion displays, and dramas. The events of the series take place at this school. Players utilize Aikatsu cards, which are unique cards that contain digital clothes and accessories from a variety of manufacturers for use in their auditions. Players use these digitized dresses and accessories to participate in these auditions. The degree to which they are successful is frequently contingent on whether or not they choose the appropriate mix of cards. The players of the video games take on the role of a freshmen at a school where they are tasked with learning how to become an idol and ascending the ranks.
Ichigo Hoshimiya is the protagonist of the anime series, and the story revolves around how she and her best friend, Aoi Kiriya, decide to attend Starlight Academy after being moved to do so by an appearance by the popular idol Mizuki Kanzaki. Ichigo and Aoi, together with their fellow student Ran Shibuki, dedicate a significant portion of each day to preparing for upcoming auditions and working toward their goal of becoming successful idols.
