Disney+ Passes On Power Rangers Reboot Series From Percy Jackson Showrunners

This current era of Super Sentai and Power Rangers is certainly testing the fandom!

Between Toei quietly benching the original Super Sentai franchise in Japan and the U.S. side hitting a massive wall, the Morphin Grid has gone dark and might remain so for quite some time.

The Super Sentai television franchise officially concluded its weekly broadcast run on February 8, 2026, after a 50-year run that began in 1975 and the Power Rangers franchise aired its last television series, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, on September 29, 2023.

On the Power Rangers side of things, there was hope that an upcoming Disney+ Power Rangers series from  Percy Jackson showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz could turn the lights back on but it seems that's not going to be the case.

Per Deadline Hollywood, Disney has decided to pass on the project. Disney’s decision to walk away was purely about budget, not the story. The pitch itself was reportedly solid, but the math just didn't work out.

In retrospect, the warning signs were already there.

Last month at San Diego Comic-Con, a Hasbro rep (Hasbro currently owns the rights to Power Rangers) confirmed that the series was in active development but not officially greenlit yet.

However, when Steinberg and Shotz hit the press line to promote Percy Jackson Season 3, Power Rangers didn't come up once. It was likely that a publicist was on hand, directing interviewers not to ask anything about Power Rangers. And now we know why: the project was already on life support.

It's a shame, especially given the wild yet exciting cast rumors that were floating around over the last few months.

Names like Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Momona Tamada (Avatar: The Last Airbender), and Shaun Dixon were supposedly in line for Ranger suits, while Priyanka Chopra was reportedly eyed to play a new spin on Rita Repulsa.

First rumored in early 2025 before finally getting confirmed that December, the reboot is officially dead in the water.

We'll likely hear more about what could have been once the showrunners start doing press rounds for Percy Jackson’s return this November.

Under new Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro, who took over from Bob Iger back in March 2026, spending at Disney+ has been dialed way down.

Wonder Man season 2 was recently cancelled, despite securing several Emmy Nominations.

Similarly, the number of high-profile and high-budget Marvel Studios and Star Wars shows has been significantly reduced for the foreseeable future in comparison to years past.

Prior to Hasbro and Disney+ working on a Power Rangers development concept, a similar deal was in place at Netflix.

In November 2021, Hasbro and Netflix announced that filmmaker Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F**ing World*) had been tapped to spearhead a reimagined Power Rangers universe across both film and television.

However, by mid-2024, reports emerged that the Entwistle-led live-action reboot had stalled and was no longer moving forward at Netflix. That's when the project shifted to Disney+.

With Power Rangers now striking out at Netflix and Disney+, perhaps Hasbro will turn to Amazon Prime Video or HBO Max next?
