Urusei Yatsura - the 1978 award-winning manga written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi - is getting a new anime adaptaiton! The announcement was made via a New Year's advertisement in January 1st edition of Sankei Shimbun.
The official site has released a teaser video and poster to celebrate the announcement.
Directed by Hideya Takahashi and Yasuhiro Kimura, this second anime television series based upon the original is slated for release sometime this year (2022). It will be produced by David Production (Fire Force, JoJo's Bizzare Adventure), and Naoyuki Asano will handle character design.
The two lead voice actors for the series have also been revealed! Sumire Useka (Shalltear Bloodfallend from Overlord) will lend her voice to Lum and Hiroshi Kamiya (Levi from Attack on Titan) will voice Ataru Moroboshi.
The original Urusei Yatsura anime aired from 1981 to 1986. It was produced by Kitty Films. Studio Pierrot handled animation for the first 106 episodes with studio Deen taking over until the series conlusion totaling 195 episodes. The anime originally aired from 1981-1986. Momoru Oshii directed the series while it was being animated at Pierrot and was succeeded by Kazuo Ymazaki when the series moved to studio Deen.
The Urusei Yatsura anime is based upon the Japanese manga of the same name written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi. It was serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday for 9 years (1978-1987). Its 374 individual chapters were compiled into 34 tankōbon volumes.
The manga has over 35 million copies in circulation and received the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1980.
