Sword Art Online Material 1: Sugary Days is the best-selling light novel of August in Japan. Oricon’s monthly print ranking, covering August 3 to August 30, put Reki Kawahara and abec’s book at number one with 27,284 copies. Kadokawa / Dengeki Bunko released it August 7 at 880 yen. It is a new first printing, so the monthly number and the lifetime number are the same.
Weekly snapshots already showed it holding first after launch week. One mid-August Oricon week still had it at about 10,030 copies after a 23.7 percent drop from the week before, with enough of a lead to stay ahead of a new Death March volume. The month-end total is the one that matters for the trophy.
Kadokawa’s own copy calls it the sweetest episode in SAO history. The setting is in Aincrad around the start of the 75th floor raid. Kirito and Asuna get married. The book follows the newlywed stretch, then sends them to a woodworker player named Mahokle because Asuna wants a custom rocking chair. That errand is the plot hook that dumps them into something less domestic. Cover art is the pair in wedding clothes. Material 1 is the label. This is the start of a side-volume line, not the next numbered mainline tome.
Sword Art Online has been a merch and adaptation machine since the web novels. TV seasons, films, games, and a 2028 original movie titled Sword Art Online -Integral Domain- are already on the board. A married-life side book topping a monthly chart in 2026 is the franchise still printing money off the couple the anime made famous.
What else sold in August
Number two was not another isekai grind. Kirby: Mugen no Haguruma — Kiri ni Tsutsumareta Daijiken!? by Mie Takase, with art by Tau Karino and Poto, moved 24,410 copies. Kadokawa published that one August 5. A Nintendo-branded novel finishing 3,000 copies behind SAO is the surprise of the list.
Kinoko Nasu and Hirokazu Koyama’s Witch on the Holy Night Part 1 took third for Seikaisha with 19,560. The Type-Moon visual novel’s book version landing that high is the other non-Kadokawa spike. A smartphone port of the original game is dated November 20.
The rest of the top ten is the usual shelf:
Full Metal Panic! Family 4, Shoji Gatoh / Shikidouji, 15,503
Magical Girl Witch Trials, Acacia, 12,259 (22,540 lifetime)
Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody 36, Hiro Ainana, 11,694
Playful Relationships 4, Sekina Aoi / Kurehito Misaki, 8,732
From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman 11, Shigeru Sagazaki, 8,637
Mobile Police Patlabor: Goto the Sushi Chef, Kazunori Ito / Masami Yuki, 7,112
Cho Kaguya-hime!, 5,669 monthly and 200,988 lifetime
Kadokawa packed the upper half. Shueisha’s ONE PIECE novel ZORO sat at 12 with 5,123 in the month and 53,088 lifetime. Too Many Losing Heroines! 9 was 14. My Next Life as a Villainess 16 was 13. Oricon monthly lists are print retail estimates, not ebook, not anime Blu-rays.
27,284 is a solid month for a side volume, not a generational smash. It is enough to beat Kirby and Nasu in the same window. Weekly fade after week one is normal. The Material line now has a sales argument for a volume 2 if Kawahara wants another Aincrad slice.
English readers do not have a Sugary Days listing in this ranking story. Yen Press has the main SAO novels. Until a license post drops, the August win is a Japan-print story.
If you wanted more floor-clearing and less rocking-chair newlywed text, this chart is not for you. If you have been waiting for official pages of married Kirito and Asuna, August already bought 27,000 of them.
