Netflix has renewed Castlevania: Nocturne for a second season. Announced on social media, production has already begun on the sophomore season of the adult animated dark fantasy action series, which served as a sequel spin-off to the original four seasons of Castlevania.
"Thanks to all of the Castlevania fans old and new for the amazing response and support," said showrunners Clive Bradley and Kevin Kolde in a shared statement alongside a brief teaser video of the official announcement. "We are excited to be able to bring you more Castlevania: Nocturne and the next chapter in the rise of Richter Belmont."
Castlevania: Nocturne debuted on Netflix on September 28. Picking up 300 years after the end of the original Castlevania series, which ran for four seasons on Netflix, the first season of Castlevania: Nocturne was set in France at the height of the French Revolution in 1792. The series follows Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor and Juste Belmont and current heir to the legendary "Vampire Killer" whip, as he teams up with Anette, a young sorceress, and his adoptive sister Maria, a young aristocrat-turned-revolutionary, to prevent an apocalypse.
The official synopsis for Season 1 reads:
In a remote part of western France, the counter-revolutionary aristocracy has forged an alliance with a terrifying Vampire Messiah, who promises to ‘eat the sun’ and unleash an army of vampires and nightcreatures to crush the revolution and enslave humanity. Annette, a sorceress from the Caribbean, seeks out Richter Belmont, last descendant of the long-fabled family of vampire hunters, to lead the resistance.
Like its predecessor, Castlevania: Nocturne is also based on the Konami video game series, and is adapted from Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and its sequel Symphony of the Night.
Also like the original series, Castlevania was met with rave reviews. The first season sits at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 15 reviews counted. The critics' consensus reads: "Bringing great flair to a struggle against demons both literal and metaphorical, Nocturne is a promising return to the world of Castlevania."
Interestingly, while the original Castlevania series was adored by fans (89% audience score), Castlevania: Nocturne sits at just a 45% audience score.
Reviews aside, Castlevania: Nocturne was a huge success for the streamer, reaching the Top 10 English TV List on just five days after dropping on Netflix.
The entire eight-episode first season of Castlevania: Nocturne is currently available on Netflix, but if you're unfamiliar with the series, you should probably start with the original Castlevania show. You can also catch all four seasons of that on the streaming platform.
