News that Kenichi Kondō's Dark Gathering manga would be receiving an anime adaptation was first announced back in November 2022 and we're rapidly approaching the show's release in Japan on July 10. Recently, the show's official Twitter has revealed that the adaptation will be 2-cour or two seasons. That's a good sign that Shueisha, Japan's largest publishing company, has a lot of faith in the Studio OLM project.
If you're unfamiliar with anime terminology, cour means "course" or season. It's more common for most anime to run for a single "cour" and then online response, ratings and merchandise sales will determine whether the show receives a second season. It's also not uncommon to see an anime adaptation receive a split-cour, which is means the anime will run for one season, take a break during the next season and then return in the following season.
Dark Gathering has been serialized in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Jump Square since March 20191. The story follows Keitaro Gentoga, an unwilling magnet for the supernatural and a ghost-hunting little girl who join forces to capture Japan’s most terrifying and dangerous spirits.
After a dangerous encounter with a malevolent spirit, Keitaro Gentoga wants nothing to do with the supernatural. Unfortunately for this reluctant ghost magnet, he’s stuck helping Yayoi Hozuki, a strange young girl who’s intent on capturing Japan’s most terrifying ghosts and ghouls.
Keitaro is ready to stop living as a shut-in. He’s starting university. He’s reconnecting with his childhood friend. He’s taking a tutoring job. And he’s not messing around with ghosts anymore. At least that’s what he thinks, until he finds out the elementary schooler he’s tutoring is an occult-obsessed genius who’s hunting down dangerous spirits and won’t stop until she’s found the one that took her mom!
