Netflix has been making quite a splash at AnimeJapan 2024 and today they revealed a trailer for Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.
The explosive trailer gives us a detailed look at the upcoming CG-anime series, which has been created using Unreal Engine 5. It also confirms the series will arrive on Netflix this Fall!
Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance is set during the One Year War, which formed the backdrop of the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam. The 6-episode series focuses on the war's European front and centers on Iria Sorari, a Principality of Zeon pilot under the "Red Wolves" division, who is tasked with defending the European front against the Earth Federation Forces' efforts to reclaim the area.
The trailer reveals some mighty impressive visuals and excellent mecha design, led largely by incredibly talented Kimitoshi Yamane. His work on previous Gundam anime, including 08th MS Team bodes well for the new series.
In a previously released teaser, Netflix confirmed that the series "follows the themes such as conflict and love seen in previous Gundam titles, as well as human drama depicted through the clash of pilots who operate humanoid weapons called Mobile Suits."
Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance is written by Gavin Hignight, who also wrote the animated series Tekken: Bloodline and Transformers: Cyberse as well as the video game Marvel's Spider-Man. The series is directed by German artist Erasmus Brosdau, who has also worked on the animated series Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and the video games Star Citizen, Ryse: Son of Rome and the Crysis series. Naohiro Ogata (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt) and Hignight are serving as executive producers, with Hiroaki Yura producing. The series was produced in collaboration with SAFEHOUSE using Unreal Engine 5.
No specific release date was announced, although Netflix did confirm that Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance will hit the streaming service in Fall 2024. Each of the six episodes will run for 30 minutes. The series is one of multiple anime titles slated to arrive this year.
Netflix also revealed at AnimeJapan 2024 that numerous other anime series and movies set to arrive this year, with some coming as early as next week. My Hero Academia Seasons 1-4 are coming on March 25th, while One Piece Film: Red will arrive on April 1st.
Anime is one of Netflix's fastest growing genres with the service confirming that at least 100 million households tuning in a year. Netflix will continue to lean into this growing momentum as evidenced by their ever-expanding catalog.
