Paramount and Nickelodeon have announced a release date for the recently revealed Avatar: The Last Airbender movie. The currently untitled film, which is based on the popular anime-influenced TV series, is set to release on October 10, 2025. Aside from the release date, there are no other details other than it being an "untitled Aang Avatar film."

This will be the first of three standalone Avatar: The Last Airbender films that are currently in development at Avatar Studios, which was formed in February 2021. The division was launched by Nickelodeon with a focus on creating original content based on both Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel spin-off The Legend of Korra.

Lauren Montgomery, who worked as a storyboard artist for the Emmy-winning Avatar series, has been tapped to helm the film. Series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzo, creators of Avatar Studios, are producing alongside Eric Coleman, the executive producer and production manager of The Last Airbender series.

“As original creators Mike and Bryan expand the ‘Avatar’ universe with us, we’re keeping it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same kind of expert, beautiful work she did on the original series to her new directing duties on the forthcoming theatrical,” said Ramsey Naito, president of animation & development at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, said back in June when plans for the three Avatar movies were announced.

The original anime-influenced Avatar series ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. The series follows the adventures of Aang, a 12-year-old with the ability to master the four elements of nature: air, water, earth and fire. As the last survivor of the Air Nomads, Aang must learn to master these elements to defeat the evil Fire Nation with the help of his friends Katara, Sokka, and Toph.

The Legend of Korra was a spin-off sequel set that followed Avatar Korra, the successor and reincarnation of Aang. Korra, like Aang, is the only Avatar, capable of bending all four elements and responsible for maintaining balance in the world.

Both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra received critical acclaim. Their success sparked extended stories told through comic series, a prequel novel series, and even a live-action film directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The 2010 film, which was based on the first season of the animated series, grossed $319 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, but was widely panned by critics, audiences and fans.

The three Avatar: The Last Airbender films are part of a much larger goal from Avatar Studios to develop original series and movies based on the universe to release in theaters and on Paramount+, Nickelodeon platforms, and other third-party platforms.

In addition to these three films, there's also a live-action Avatar adaptation in development at Netflix. Production on the show wrapped back in June.
