After years of Detective Conan and Case Closed anime films coming close to the 10 billion yen milestone, the latest film in the franchise, Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine, eventually became the first film in the franchise to accomplish so during Golden Week, only 24 days after it aired on April 14 in Japan. This achievement happened little over a week after the film's initial release in Japan.
Gosho Aoyama, the writer of the Conan manga, designed a festive artwork of Conan announcing the cheer screenings that will begin later this month as a way to mark the occasion:
With 7.28 million tickets sold as of May 7th, Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine has generated a total revenue of 1,034,483,700 yen, which is equivalent to $87.56 million USD. Because of this, Black Iron Submarine has become the 40th highest-grossing film of all time, the 12th most-grossing anime film of all time in Japan, and the film with the greatest domestic box office total in the franchise's history in Japan. It did it a day sooner than Spirited Away and four days after One Piece Film Red, making it the third quickest film in the history of the Japanese box office to achieve the 10 billion yen milestone.

Many engineers from around the world gather at the Interpol marine facility "Pacific Buoy" on Hachijo-jima, in the off sea south of central Tokyo Prefecture coast, to witness the launch of a new system that connects all law enforcement camera systems around the world and enables facial recognition worldwide. Conan, along with his friends Kogoro, Ran, Agasa, Haibara, and the Detective Boys, also heads on the island with an invitation from Sonoko to see the whales. He receives a message from Subaru, who says that an Europol agent has been murdered in Germany by Gin. Perturbed, Conan sneaks onto the police ship led by Kuroda, which is bringing them to the island to protect the completion work, and tours the new facility, just in time for the Black Organization to kidnap a female engineer, seeking a piece of important data in her USB drive. A terrifying howl of screws is heard from the ocean, as an unknown person approaches Haibara.
