The main storyline centers around Satoru Mikami, a 37-year-old man who lives in Tokyo. Satoru is suddenly killed and comes back reincarnated as a slime with special abilities in a world of swords and sorcery. He continues to make friends and recruit other monsters to help him construct his own nation of monsters.
Soon, Rimuru and his subjects will attract the notice of the neighboring foreign powers, ranging from kings and legendary heroes to demon lords. Some of these foreign forces will attempt to become their allies, while others will try to take advantage of them or utterly wipe them out.

In October of 2018, the first episode of the television anime adaptation of Taiki Kawakami's manga, which was adapted from a Japanese light novel series written by Fuse and Mitz Vah, was shown. The anime was streamed on Crunchyroll, and the English dubbed version was streamed on FUNimation Entertainment's website.

The launch of the second season of the anime television program took place in January of 2021. After that, in April 2021, the first episode of the television anime adaptation of Shiba's spinoff manga The Slime Diaries: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime aired on Tokyo MX. After the conclusion of the first season of The Slime Diaries in July 2021, the second season of the anime franchise began airing on television, continuing on for nine months of the year.

The second portion was streamed on Crunchyroll as well as Funimation's website. In addition, Funimation provided a stream of the English dub.

The premiere of the movie is scheduled to begin screening on November 25 in Japan. Beginning in early 2023, Crunchyroll will release the film in all of the major global markets, with the exception of Asia. The release of the movie in international markets will begin in December and will ultimately take place in the countries of the following: the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, France, Germany, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South and Central America. The crew has also discussed the possibility of showing the movie in additional nations and areas.
