Recently the first trailer for the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime debuted online to great fanfare and fans of the 2004 graphic novel series were excited to see many scenes that seemed to be recreations of the live-action film adaptation and the original comic.
However, series creator Bryan Lee O'Malley recently posted on his Instagram Stories feed that the anime won't be a perfect recreation of his graphic novels.
"I don’t know who needs to hear this but… It’s not the books,” O’Malley posted. “I already wrote those and you read them anytime. The show is its own new thing in many ways. Do NOT expect a word-for-word remake. Many fun surprises to come."
Scott Pilgrim consists of six volumes released between 2004-2010. A live-action film adaptation starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Ellen Wong, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, and Mae Whitman was released in 2010.
The film was a box office flop, grossing $49.3 million worldwide from a production budget of $60 million. However, it's developed a cult following in the last decade plus.
Studio Science Saru is producing a TV anime adaptation for Netflix that will see all of the live-action film's cast returning to voice their anime counterparts. The anime will consist of 8 episodes and will be released on November 17, 2023.
Edgar Wright, who directed the live-action film, is returning to executive produce the new anime.
