For anime fans, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc is considered a must-watch by many. And soon, the cinematic remake trilogy will be available to watch on Blu-ray.
As we previously noted in our recent home release round-up, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc is coming to Blu-ray in late August. More specifically, it's Berserk: The Golden Age Arc Memorial Edition, which is a remastered version of Berserk: The Golden Age Arc with new scenes and edited for television broadcast.
The original Berserk: The Golden Age Arc is a Japanese anime film trilogy that adapts Kentaro Miura's Berserk manga series's Golden Age arc. The first two films, The Egg of the King and The Battle for Doldrey, were released in Japan in February and June 2012, respectively. The third film, The Advent, was released in Febuary 2013.
Viz Media licensed the trilogy for English home video release in North America, with the remastered edited version — Memorial Edition — broadcast over 13 episodes from October to December 2022.
The original anime adaptation of the Golden Age arc of Berserk aired in 1997 but deviated from the source material. The Golden Age films attempted are considered far more faithful to the manga mixing animation with CGI.
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc Memorial Edition will be released on August 27, 2024. Crunchyroll describes the film trilogy:
When lone swordsman Guts is defeated in a duel by Griffith, ambitious leader of the Band of the Hawk mercenaries, he now must fight for him. Distrustful of all at first, through hard-fought battles, he soon begins to bond with his new comrades and their leader. As they rise in rank to a full-fledged army, he begins to harbor doubts about a life lived by the blade, unaware a dreadful fate awaits.
With still a few months to go, passionate fans can already pre-order the Blu-ray today from Amazon or Crunchyroll. It's available for pre-order for $69.98 on Amazon with free shipping. Crunchyroll is actually offering a generous discount, listing the Blu-ray for $52.49. Because Amazon doesn't charge until your order ships, there's a chance the online retail giant could match Crunchyroll's price.
The Blu-ray will feature the entire trilogy in both English and Japanese dubs. As far as extras, the two-disc set comes with the textless opening and ending songs. The cover art, while not final, looks like Guts will be featured front and center in all his glorious berserker rage.
Several other critically acclaimed and beloved animes are getting a home release in August, including My Hero Academia - Season 6 Part 2 and Hell's Paradise Season 1. Both will be getting Limited Edition releases as well.
