The live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender's first season of the Netflix series has finished filming, and the streaming service has been quietly adding more and more members to the cast of the highly anticipated (or highly criticized, depending on your point of view) series.
Gordon Cormier, who plays Aang, shared the news that production had officially wrapped up on his Instagram account. He made the announcement alongside a humorous photo of himself with co-stars Kia wentiio, Dallas Lie, and Ian Ousley, who plays Zuko and Sokka, respectively (Katara).
Despite the fact that the main cast of characters, which includes Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, and others, were announced all the way back in April, the casting of a large number of fan-favorite supporting characters is still unknown, and it is unclear whether or not these characters will appear at all.
It was just recently reported over on Comicbook.com in a series of articles that several new names have joined the series as fan favorite secondary characters such as King Bumi, bounty hunter June, and the notorious and frequently quoted Cabbage man.
On July 27, Avatar News and Knight Edge were the first to break the news that a comedic actor named Utkarsh Ambudkar would be playing the role of Bumi, Aang's former friend and the self-proclaimed king of Omashu (Free Guy, Pitch Perfect). According to rumors, he has already reported to the set and filmed some scenes playing the role of the elderly and forgetful monarch.
In addition to this, it has been said that Danny Pudi, who is known for his roles in the shows Community and Ducktales, will play The Mechanist. The Mechanist was a down-on-his-luck inventor who was mourning the loss of his wife when he was eventually inspired by The Avatar to join in the efforts against the fire nation. In the original series, The Mechanist was one of the main characters. There has been no announcement made as of yet regarding whether or not the series will include the characters' son, Teo, who was rendered unable to move below the waist as a result of the same accident that claimed the life of his mother. Despite the fact that Netflix has not made any announcements regarding the character as of yet, we have to assume that they are not so ignorant as to leave out such a significant piece of representation to the disabled community.
Arden Cho (Chicago Med), a former cast member of Teen Wolf, will play the role of bounty hunter June. June was a citizen of the Earth Kingdom who had spent her childhood traveling the world with her father, who was also a bounty hunter. Zuko had hired June to locate and apprehend the Avatar and his companions. Even though she does not bend reality, she is still a formidable opponent in combat.
Fans will be overjoyed to learn that the legendary and frequently quoted Cabbage Merchant will be making an appearance in the series, and that none other than James Sie will take on the role of the character. Sie provided the voice for the character when it was first introduced, and she went on to provide the voice for the character's descendant in The Legend of Korra. Therefore, fans of the first series will undoubtedly be pleased to hear this news.
There has not been an announcement made regarding a release date for the series, nor has a trailer or even any official stills of the cast portraying their respective roles been released. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we will soon begin to see some official releases, and we are also keeping our fingers crossed that the series will hopefully be able to live up to the legacy of what has come before it. The fact that the original creators withdrew their participation in the project at an early stage in the production process did not lend the series any good will right out of the gate, despite the fact that it has some very large shoes to fill.
