In the rare bit of actual good news for Netflix, Tonko House took home two awards for its collaboration, Oni: Thunder God's Tale, which was released on Netflix late last year. The series featured the art of stop-motion to tell its story in the four episodes it was allotted.
The awards the show snagged were the Best Limited Series and its Best Production Design awards. Director Daisuke Tsutsumi was there to accept the awards and expressed his gratitude and happiness to reporters for his work being among other notable contenders like Disney's BAYMAX!, Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal, and more.
"I cannot believe it. There were many nominations of very high-quality work, so I am extremely happy."
Oni: Thunder God's Tale was nominated for even more awards but fell short of the others like Best Character Animation, Best Character Design, Best Direction, and Best Music. With Tokyo House taking this coveted title, it's rather notable as no anime series have won any Annies awards in the past three years at least.
Tonko House started development on the anime in 2019 as a blend of CGI and stop-motion, with the latter of the styles falling on fellow Japanese studio Dwarf Animation. Oni: Thunder God's Tale follows a young girl named Onari who is forced to save her peaceful village from devious Oni looking to shake up the peaceful village.
