Earlier  this year, it was confirmed that Warner Bros. was moving forward with a sequel to 2014's Edge of Tomorrow, which grossed $370.5 million from an estimated production budget of $178 million.  Not  a bomb, as many analysts predicted in the weeks prior to the film's release but certainly not a monumental success, hence the two year gap between the sequel's announcement.  Doug Liman will return to direct, with Race screenwriters  Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse tackling the screenplay.

Liman recently spoke to Collider about his forthcoming scripted supernatural VR series Invisible, but also very briefly addressed the Edge of Tomorrow sequel.  Said Liman, "That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing—much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film—and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.”

While the film was not a box office hit, the concept struck a chord with critics and the general audience, earning favorable scores on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes.  With more people discovering the sci-fi gem on On-Demand and Home Video, perhaps Cruise and the studio feel confident that the sequel will resonate with audiences better the second time around?
