It's been a little over six months since Netflix renewed its One Piece live-action adaptation for a second season. Pre-production is currently underway on the next chapter of the series with production reportedly scheduled to begin this summer.
While Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the highly anticipated second season, a new report from What's On Netflix has offered a production timeline along with a release window.
According to an earlier ProductionWeekly issue 1393 posted back in mid-March, production on season 2 of One Piece is due to begin around June 2024. What's On Netflix corroborated the mid-June production date, adding that it's "currently set up for at least a seven-month and a bit shoot, which will take through late January 2025."
The trade notes that's "roughly a similar length shoot to season 1, which filmed for six months and 22 days between January 31st, 2022, through August 22nd."
With production running through January 2025, it's believed that One Piece Season 2 will return at some point next year. This was a similar timeline reported by Deadline earlier. Some are speculating the show will aim for a summer release in 2025, although nothing official has been announced.
Netflix's One Piece first premiered last August. The live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese manga (and anime series) was a hit with critics and fans alike. It was Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 85% among critics, while scoring a whopping 95% with general audiences.
The series follows the adventures of young pirate Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) as he sails across the seas with his Straw Hats gang — swordsman Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), cartographer Nami (Emily Rudd), storyteller Usopp (Jacob Romero), and chef Sanji (Taz Skylar) -- on a quest to find the infamous pirate Gold Roger’s (Michael Dorman) mysterious treasure, the One Piece, and become the King of the Pirates.
In recent news, it was confirmed that Percy Jackson and the Olympians co-executive producer Joe Tracz will join the team as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner on the upcoming second season. He will be working alongside Season 1 writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner Matt Owens, and stepping in for Steve Maeda, who developed the series with Owens and served as co-showrunner o the first season. Maeda will remain as an executive producer on the show.
With production beginning this summer, we should hopefully get our first glimpses of the highly anticipated second season of One Piece later this year.
