SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2: The Video Game Movie Sequel Is Called SONIC VS. KNUCKLES In Japan

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 wont actually be called Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in Japan. Instead, the video game movie sequel is titled: Sonic vs. Knuckles. Find out more...

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to arrive in theaters on April 8th, 2022; that is, at least, in the United States. The first live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie had a sputtered release across the world on account of the COVID-19 pandemic. While a Japanese release for the sequel has been confirmed, exactly when it will take place is currently unknown — but we will keep you updated.

On the topic of the Japanese release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, though, it appears that the video game movie sequel will have a different title over in Japan.

The official website for the Sonic the Hedgehog movies in Japan has shared a logo for the film in the respective language and, when translated, it reads "Sonic vs. Knuckles." Tails (played by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) does have some representation, though. While the "2" in the English logo is stylised to look like the flying fox, the "vs." in the Japanese logo holds that honour.

As we learned from the recently released trailer, which you can check out here, Knuckles (played by Idris Elba) will play an antagonistic role in the film, at least at first, playing second fiddle to Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey); the title reflects that plot point. It's quite reminiscent of the 1994 game Sonic & Knuckles but it's believed that this title has actually been chosen as Japanese audiences have an affinity for face-offs, like Godzilla vs. Kong for instance.
