As holidays come to a close and we fully enter a new year, we're still learning things about the Japanese box office that we didn't know before. As of January 4, CoMix Wave Films' Suzume anime film has hit number 30 in all-time sales in Japan since its mid-November theatrical release.
The anime film hit theaters on November 11 and found great success from the 8.51 million tickets sold since its debut. The film earned an estimated $82.97 million at The Land of the Rising Sun's box office, while it doesn't mark itself any higher, it is still in theaters currently and hasn't gone global just yet, only having released in Japan. Other companies plan to distribute the film in Taiwan, South Korea, and India, while Crunchyroll will handle the film distribution in North America.
The favorable results could be an excellent sign for the Japanese anime maker if the non-holiday period keeps up with its holiday period. If the film does keep up, Suzume could easily end up as Makoto Shinkai's second-highest-grossing film of all time, only beaten out by Your Name, which has a lead as the third highest-grossing anime film of ever.
Suzume started life in 2020 as a film commission. Produced by CoMix Wave Films, which is best known to the anime community as the producer of other original works of Shinkai like Your Name and The Garden of Words. The same man wrote and directed the film, while the Japanese rock band, Radwimps, produced the score for the movie alongside Kazuma Jinnouchi. Masayoshi Tanaka took on the task of character design while Kenichi Tsuchiya returned from his work on Your Name to keep his role as animation director. Takumi Tanji returned as well as the art director.
