Toei Announces New DRAGON BALL SUPER Anime Film Slated For 2022

After accidentally leaking the news a day early, Toei Animation celebrated Goku Day with the reveal that a new Dragon Ball Super anime film is currently in production and slated to hit theaters in 2022.

Over the weekend Toei Animation announced on Goku Day that a new Dragon Ball Super anime film is currently in production and slated to hit theaters in Japan in 2022.

Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama also celebrated the news chiming in with, "An all new movie since ‘Dragon Ball Super: Broly’ is currently in the making! Just like the previous movie, I’m heavily leading the story and dialogue production for another amazing film. I really shouldn’t talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character. We’ll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie."

Dragon Ball Super, which is set after the defeat of  Majin Buu but before the final episode of Dragon Ball Z which jumps quite a ways into the future, hit air waves in July 2015 for a 131 episode run that concluded in March 2018.  It was followed up by a new anime film, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which was released in Japan in December 2018.

While the TV anime has been concluded for quite some time, the manga has remained ongoing, introducing a recently wrapped up arc centered on the magical villain Moro and the currently ongoing arc focused on the Saiyan-hating Granolah.   However, fans are interpreting Toriyama's comments to mean that the anime film will introduce another non-canon anime film villain, similar to the Broly film.   This has fans throwing out suggestions ranging from foes like Garlic Jr. to Cooler or Bojack.

Keep it locked to Anime Mojo for future updates on the project as we await details on the story's plot and an exact release date.
