The second season of Studio Orange's Beastars adaptation is finally heading to Netflix accounts outside of Japan. The official Studio Orange Twitter account confirmed a July 15 release date (along with an official release date for Godzilla: Singular Point).
The 12-episode second season was originally released in Japan in January and concluded this past March. In keeping with Netflix's binge-watching model, the streamer is waiting until the series finished its run in Japan before making all episodes available to binge.
Last year, manga creator Paru Itagaki concluded the manga series at the height of its popularity at 22 volumes (the final volume was released this past July). The second season concludes in the middle of volume 12 so there's plenty of source material left to animate. A third season has not been officially announced but seems likely given the series' popularity.
Itagaki, a notoriously shy mangaka (she does interviews in a rooster mask), is the daughter of Keisuke Itagaki, who is popular for creating the Baki manga series. Paru followed in her famous father's footsteps with Beastars in September 2016. She hid the fact that she was Keisuke's daughter for over two years.
The series resided in Akita Shoten's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Champion where it released 196 chapters (think individual comic book issues) that were compiled into 22 volumes (think trade paperbacks).
VIZ Media holds the English language license for the series and has released 8 volumes to date with the 9th volume scheduled for a November 17 release. The first season of Studio Orange's 12-episode TV anime adaptation covered (approximately) the first 6 volumes.
